CU Journal Issues Call For Best Practices Entries
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.-Credit Union Journal has issued its call for entries for the 2009 Best Practices Awards.
Nominations may be submitted by credit unions themselves, a CUSO, or even another credit union. Nominations can also be submitted by suppliers to the credit union community that have clients they believe exemplify the best practice in implementing a particular product or service.

Obama Appoints Matz To Serve As NCUA Chair
WASHINGTON-The White House announced it is reaching into the past for its next NCUA Chairman and will nominate to the post Democrat Deborah Matz, who served on the three-member panel from 2002 to 2005.
Matz, who served as interim president of Andrews FCU in Suitland, Md., until last June, and as executive vice president there before that, would succeed Republican Michael Fryzel, who has served in the post only since last August. Fryzel, who has led the corporate credit union bailout, would remain on the board, but not as chairman. If confirmed by the Senate, Matz will fill the spot to be vacated by Republican Rodney Hood.
CU Asks Members: 'What Would You Do With 10K?'
EAST HARTFORD, Conn.-A member of American Eagle FCU won $10,000 in the credit union' 'What would you do with 10K' contest, which she will use to return to her native Switzerland.
In her online post, Frances Miller wrote, "I would return to Switzerland where I worked as a physical therapist in 1964-65. I'd like to renew old acquaintances and feast my eyes again on the Matterhorn, in the Alps, a mountain peak that I climbed to the top of when I was younger-much younger! I know my heart would 'yodel' at the very opportunity. If anything was left over, I'd paint and paint, a hobby over which I am passionate."
Paragon FCU's Aero Club Takes Off
OAKLAND, N.J.-Paragon FCU's Aero Club, a program that uses remote-controlled model airplanes to foster student interest in science, took off again late last week at Valley Middle School.
The Aero Club was created by Paragon's CEO Richard Rays, an avid aviator himself, and aims to inspires kids' interest in science by allowing them to build and fly remote-controlled model airplanes. The process gives educators a variety of opportunities to introduce flight-related concepts from physics, engineering and mathematics.
Navy FCU Lands Anew In Texas
HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas-Navy FCU continues to expand its footprint with plans to open a new branch here, the eighth in Texas and 177th overall for the $40-billion credit union. The 3,289-square-foot facility will have nine employees and an ATM.
North Carolina SECU Donates $200K
RALEIGH, N.C.-State Employees CU said its SECU Foundation has contributed $200,000 to the Mitchell County Courthouse Foundation for renovations to the historic courthouse.
The courthouse is located in Bakersville in the mountains of western North Carolina, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior.
The project will include an SECU Virtual Learning and Communication Center, which will house a telecommunications and public access computer system, providing area residents access to educational, cultural, and economic development opportunities that are not currently possible.
FHLB Boston Brings Back Ex-CFO
BOSTON-The Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston announced the hiring of Edward Hjerpe, who served as a senior executive at the Boston FHLB for seven years, to be its next CEO.
Hjerpe will succeed CEO Michael Jessie, as the Boston Bank continues to fight off big losses related to its mortgage-backed securities holdings, one of a handful of FHLBs weighed down by MBS. The bank reported an $83.4-million loss for the first quarter of 2009, and a $73.2-million loss for 2008.
Hjerpe was an executive vice president, the chief operating officer and the chief financial officer at the Boston bank from 1997 to 2004. He then moved to Webster Financial Corp., where he was a senior vice president from 2004 through 2007.
