CU Tax Bill Possible In Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -A bill that would remove tax deductions and credits on excise taxes for credit unions was among those being considered by the Alabama legislature last week after Gov. Bob Riley called a special session seeking to raise up to $1.2 billion revenue. The Alabama league had drafted an amendment that would firm up both the deductions and the excise tax credits, and was anticipating strong opposition from banks, including a PR campaign arguing that credit unions aren't willing to do their share.
Bosack To Move To NCUA
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-CUNA VP-Information Services Steve Bosack is expected to be named executive assistant to NCUA Board Member Deborah Matz. Bosack has been undergoing vetting and background checks by the White House, and should be named to the post soon.
Deposits Flowing Into WesCorp
SAN DIMAS-WesCorp FCU, the largest corporate credit union, said new savings keep pouring in from natural- person credit unions. The corporate giant said it has grown 14% since the first of the year to a new high of $23.4 billion in assets, more than three times as much as any other corporate.
CU House May Open In Missouri
ST. LOUIS-Credit Union House in Washington may be about to get its first branch. The Missouri CU Association (MCUA) is negotiating to open a Missouri Credit Union House in Jefferson City, the state capital. Like The Credit Union House in Washington, D.C., it will be used as a base of operations for credit unions visiting the capital.
16-Year-Old Helps Nab Robber
LEHI, Utah-A 16-year-old boy found a credit union robber hiding underneath a picnic table in his grandfather's backyard and helped collar the thief after the man escaped from police custody. "What happened was, he ran into the backyard and the teenager, and, I believe, his grandmother, were on the patio and they heard rustling under the table," Lehi Police Sgt. Darren Paul, told The Credit Union Journal. "So they notified me, and I came over and got him out." The suspect, 30-year-old Justin Weckler, was arrested shortly after allegedly robbing Alpine CU, then ran off into a nearby residential neighborhood while his hands were handcuffed behind his back. Weckler later confessed to six other armed credit union and bank robberies, police said.
