PORTLAND, Ore. – OnPoint Community CU has notified customers that a laptop that may have contained customer names and their account numbers was stolen Oct. 29.
OnPoint estimates that the names of fewer than half of its 188,000 members were listed in the computer, which was the property of one of the credit union's outside auditors. Also in the computer's files were those customer's account numbers and the balances they hold in certain types of deposit accounts.
Not included in the computer's files were customers' Social Security or tax identification numbers. There was also no credit or debit card information, account passwords or customer birth dates.
In a Nov. 4 letter to members, Robert Stuart, president of the $2.5 billion credit union, apologized and suggested that customers continue to monitor. There have been no reports of any suspicious activity in customer accounts, he said.
