Phishing scams targeting any institution with the words "credit union" in their name show no signs of abating. The Illinois Credit Union League reported that an e-mail with the words "Important Information from Customer Support Center" in the message line and including a link that attempted to persuade recipients to fill out an "Illinois Credit League Survey" for which they would be given $25 "for research purposes only" have been hitting some consumers in the state.
The return address was similar to that of the Illinois league. In Oshkosh, Wis., meanwhile, an e-mail purportedly from Oshkosh Central Credit Union offering to credit $100 to members' accounts for participating in a five-question survey were also being circulated. Once consumers finished the bogus e-mail they are urged to click on an embedded link. Members who actually did so were being urged to contact the credit union immediately. Also involved in e-mail scams in recent days: NCUA and Kauai Community FCU, Lihue, Hawaii, which is the third Hawaiian credit union to be targeted by a phishing scam.
