Preparing For What's Expected To Be A Most Competitive Election

WASHINGTON-Mid-term elections are drawing near, and yet another shake-up could be in store, CUNA suggested. "These elections are shaping up to be the most competitive," said CUNA's Trey Hawkins. Due to senators stepping down, no matter how the two primary political parties perform in these elections, there will be 10 new senators and 33 new representatives in the House. In addition, there are more than 60 seats in the House and more than 12 in the Senate that are considered to be "up for grabs." "There are opportunities for us in such an unpredictable election year," Hawkins observed, noting that there are 706,000 people in every Congressional district - and of those, about 214,000 of them are credit union members. That means if CUs are seen to be actively "rocking the vote" - getting their members registered to vote, running endorsements in newsletters and otherwise helping candidates - CUs will be seen as a political force to be reckoned with.
