SUFFOLK, Va. – Two men caught red-handed when the dye pack exploded in the cash they stole from Bayport FCU apparently converted thousands of dollars of the ink-stained money into coins at local businesses.
Two days after the May 8 robbery, stained currency was recovered from machines at local businesses that change bills into quarters. Detectives then notified local business with Coin Star machines to look for men attempting to convert large quantities of quarters into paper bills. Later that day, police learned that two men used the machine at the Food Lion to change approximately 2,100 quarters into paper currency.
On May 10, money with red stains was recovered from cash conversion machines at local businesses.
The dye pack was inserted into the money bag during the robbery and police believe the pack exploded when the robbers tried to open the bag.
