KANSAS CITY, Mo. A recidivist bank robber convicted in November of four armed robberies, including three at area credit unions, yesterday was sentenced to 95 years in prison.
Charles Shaw, 55, who prosecutors said had five prior convictions for armed robbery dating back to 1983, also was ordered to pay $54,000 in restitution.
Shaw was convicted of robbing Main Street CU in Leavenworth on Nov. 24, 2010; Education CU in Topeka on Dec. 30, 2011; and attempting to rob Education CU on Feb. 9, 2012. Shaw rode a bicycle to the credit union that day and was wearing a blue stocking cap, sunglasses and a blue bandana around his neck while carrying a blue fanny pack.
When the guard approached Shaw and tried to question him, Shaw left the credit union and began running. He was taken into custody after he slipped and fell, breaking his left ankle.
Police found a .45-caliber pistol in Shaw’s fanny pack.
Shaw also was convicted of a Feb. 14, 2011 armed robbery at Citizens National Bank in Leavenworth. He was acquitted of a charge of robbing the Kaw Valley State Bank in Topeka on Oct. 10, 2010.
