FAIRFAX, Va. – Students, teachers and staff at Osbourn Park High School rallied this April to out-save their cross-town rivals at Stonewall Jackson High School in Apple FCU’s annual ‘Save the Pig’ savings competition.
The competition that initially began as a save-off between the two high schools, was extended this year to all four Apple student-run branches within Prince William County, Va. Each school’s goal was to promote the value of saving for the future, and earn bragging rights, as well as interest, by securing the most deposits via their Apple student-run branch.
The savings competition is part of a national campaign sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and The Advertising Council that works to improve financial literacy and economic awareness amongst high school students. All total, the six participating schools saved nearly $30,700, with Osbourn edging out the competition by securing $9,023 in deposits (29% of the final total) during the three-week contest.
