WORCESTER, Mass. – A not-too-smart robber was charged with holdups at two area credit unions after he left a deposit slip from one of them behind – with his name, Social Security number and signature on it.
The suspect, identified as Scott Sampson, 37, on Monday was charged with armed robbery in connection with Friday night’s holdup at Digital FCU in Auburn.
Police said Sampson entered the branch around 6 p.m. Friday and handed a teller two slips. One had a note on it indicating he had a gun, according to the detective. He then demanded money from the teller and fled on foot with about $1,000 in $10 bills, police allege.
The second of the two slips, both of which were left behind by the robber, had Sampson’s name, Social Security number and signature on it, according to police.
Police confirmed Sampson’s identity as the robber by comparing his photograph from state Registry of Motor Vehicles and Worcester Police Department computers to surveillance videos from the holdup.
Sampson is expected to also be charged with Saturday morning’s robbery at First FCU, police said. In that holdup, a suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money after handing a teller a note demanding cash, according to police. No weapon was shown, but the robber mentioned having a firearm, investigators said.
Sampson was arrested Sunday after he was found in a hotel in nearby Natick. Inside the hotel room was some of the money taken from the Auburn credit union.
