SAN JOSE, Calif.-Michelle Greear, AVP training and career development at the $1.3-billion Technology CU in San Jose, Calif., sees 2009 bringing more cross-training opportunities, both to benefit employees and the CU. For staff, since more may stay put at the credit union due to the tight job market, employees will seek greater opportunities and expanded roles.
"I think more employees will be looking across divisions, departments, and even platforms to expand their knowledge and careers," Greear said.
With most credit unions likely to limit hiring, employees will need more skills to move between roles and be flexible. "The credit union may need to reallocate individuals for periods of time to keep pace with increased volume in a particular department," said Greear, who suggested that staff may split hours each day between different roles.
"We need to be as creative as we can while being sensitive to our employees," Greear said. "If we do this right, I think when we pull out of this tight economy our staff will feel they have had a very good opportunity to expand their resumes and skills."
