Romanian Phone Scam Targets CU Members

MANKATO, Minn. – At least one area credit union is reporting its members are being fooled by a telephone scam apparently coming from Romania asking area people to disclose their debit card information.

Minnesota Valley FCU said hundreds of computer-generated calls, to credit union members and non-members alike, have been made with the caller claiming to represent the credit union and saying people’s cards have been deactivated and card number information is needed to reactivate them.

The credit union reported a couple of people have been bilked, both for small amounts.  One transaction was traced to an ATM in Romania.

The caller ID number that has popped up on many calls is 973-448-2000, the number of a Township Hall in New Jersey.

Police advise people to simply hang up if such calls are received and, if information is given out, to contact the credit card provider to cancel the cards.
