Seattle Church Groups Flee Bank Of America For BECU

SEATTLE – Two faith-based groups held a protest outside a Bank of America branch in the University District on Friday to announce the transfer of their organizations’ funds to local financial institutions and depositing them with a nearby branch of BECU, a continuation of Bank Transfer Day.

A group of about 12 cheered as it walked a block and a half south on University Way Northeast to a branch of BECU, formerly known as Boeing Employees CU. As passers-by looked on, they shouted – with the aid of a megaphone – “corporate greed has got to go,” “people not profits” and “economic justice for all.”

The Church Council of Greater Seattle, which represents more than 340 local churches, and the Faith Action Network, an interfaith organization, said they were promoting local investment and helping those most affected by the economic downturn. The two groups called on other faith-based organizations to join them.

The groups are calling themselves the Washington Faith-Based Organizations to Divest from Bank of America.
