NILES, Mich. – One of three gunmen who robbed Berrien Teachers CU Friday morning was shot by a security guard and the robber died from his wounds later, while his two accomplices escaped and remained on the loose over the weekend.
Two of the suspects entered the credit union with their guns drawn and encountered the security guard for the building and a gunfight erupted, police said. At least five shots were fired.
Several employees and members were inside the branch when the shooting occurred but none of them were injured.
The two suspects, one of whom was hit by the guard’s fire, fled on foot and were picked up in the parking lot by a third man. The getaway car driver then dropped the wounded man off at a nearby hospital where he later died in surgery from his wounds.
The dead man was identified as Devarence Kimbrough , 22, of Elkhart, Ind.
