PROVIDENCE, R.I.–Former Rhode Island Senator Clairborne Pell, who died on New Year’s Day, is best known for the federal college-grant program that bears his name, but Pell’s work also played a vital role in underwriting one well-known credit union program.

Pell, along with Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE), co-sponsored the Biden-Pell Amendment in 1982 that was attached to Foreign Assistance Legislation. That included funding for grants, one of which was won by the then CUNA foundation to create the U.S. Credit Union Development Education (DE) program, currently run by the National Credit Union Foundation. Pell, 90, served in the Senate from 1961-1997.
