Son Charged With Stealing $200,000 From Elderly Mother

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. – A 71-year-old man was charged yesterday with elder abuse after he took his wheelchair-bound 94-year-old mother to Marine FCU and then her bank, then withdrew more than $200,000 and closed the accounts.

Police said Charles Farnell added his name to the accounts of his mother, who suffers from dementia and has suffered several strokes.

The Department of Social Services contacted deputies in August and Farnell was arrested Monday after an investigation.

Farnell's bond was set at $30,000.
