WASHINGTON - Credit unions were told by both CUNA’s president and outgoing chairman to make sure they spoke with “one voice” while in Washington for GAC. CUNA President Dan Mica and Allan Kemp McMorris, who finished his term as chairman while at GAC, said that a consistent message was the best way to ensure being heard in Congress.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned in my tenure (as chairman) is that the credit union movement is best served when we speak with one voice,” McMorris told the meeting. That “one voice,” however, would be used to speak on two bills, CURIA and the “lite” version, called CURRA (see related story page 1).
In his remarks, Mica spoke of how the credit union voice is being distributed using both new and old media.
He talked of how CUNA has successfully made itself and its representatives a source to various news publications, including the Wall Street Journal, and electronic media, such as Bloomberg Radio. In terms of new media, he reviewed for his audience the way the trade group has sought to raise exposure for its “Little Guy” character using outlets such as YoutTube, where a video was downloaded 65,000 times in 2007.
