HELENA, Mont. – A local man was sentenced last week to 26 months in prison for stealing his brother’s identity and using it to open an account at Elkhorn CU.

James Carbis, 36, had used his brother’s Social Security number to open bank accounts, because he had bad credit. He was caught after trying to deposit money from his Mountain West Bank checking account into an account he had at Elkhorn, after the Mountain West Bank account had been closed.
Carbis admitted to the identity theft, noting he had caused his brother to lose a leased vehicle and a business due to the bad credit Carbis racked up in his brother’s name.
Carbis pleaded guilty earlier this year to fraudulent use of a Social Security card and aggravated identity theft.
