PORTLAND, Ore. – A man believed to have held up Advantis CU Friday morning apparently shot himself in the head as police tried to negotiate his surrender inside a garage nearby the credit union.
The FBI tracked the suspect to a garage where police blocked off the area and activated an emergency team. Officers shot tear gas into to the garage and found the suspect dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot in a Jeep Cherokee, according to police. There were two weapons in the vehicle.
A man fitting the same description entered the credit union around 10 a.m. and gave a demand note to the teller, without showing a weapon, then ran out of the credit union into a nearby garage.
Police as well as a SWAT team and Portland Fire and Rescue crews responded to the scene and engaged in negotiations throughout the day. Officers finally entered the garage at about 6:30 p.m. and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
