Taking A Break From Hackers

TOLEDO, Ohio-Employees at ProMedica FCU here like to use Facebook on business computers during breaks, which is worrisome because social media sites are a haven for hackers, said Rick Haas, CEO.

But Haas said he has found a way around the threat.

"Social networking sites and newspaper obituaries are common spots where employees inadvertently download malware," he said. So Haas set up two lunchroom computers that connect to the Internet via a cable network separate from the credit union's business network.

"Employees can mess up those two computers as much as they want," he said. If performance on the lunchroom computers begins to suffer, Haas said he can wipe the systems and start fresh without compromising member data.
