Economy Raises Fraud Fears
AUSTIN, Texas-More than 40% of IT executives said they are more concerned about information security in the face of the troubled economy, according to a recent survey by Credit Union Information Security Professionals Association (CUISPA).
The trade group said there appears to be an overall heightened awareness of security issues, among information security professionals in credit union land. "As times get tough and more people lose their jobs, they are more likely to resort to drastic measures," said Michael Shoemaker, CTO of $700-million First Entertainment CU.
And those concerns spread beyond the general public, CUISPA reported. "Insider threats and fraud attempts by account holders are starting to weigh heavy on IT staffs," the group said. "At least one respondent has experienced an increase in check and loan fraud as the economy has turned. Credit card fraud and threats related to card processors continue to be the top concern for most credit unions."
