MOON TOWNSHIP, Penn. – A former lead teller for West-Aircomm FCU yesterday was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for making false entries in a bank record in relation to a two-year string of transactions in which she stole $400,000 in cash from the credit union’s ATMs.
Shirley Howl, 56, also was ordered to pay that amount in restitution to the credit union.
Howl adjusted the log entries showing how much cash was in the machines, tore out portions of the paper tapes that recorded transactions, and told other employees to throw away backup tapes, all in an effort to hide her scheme.
Prosecutors said Howl also shifted funds to cover her tracks before annual cash counts. But in late 2009, she was out of the office at the time of a cash count. Then employees found that the three cash machines were short a total of $400,000.
