NEW YORK – Had you been able to buy a home anywhere in the U.S. in the year 2000, where would you have seen the most appreciation?
With home data for January now available, it is possible to show the best and worst places to have bought and owned real estate over the first decade of this century. The best places to have lived: New York, Washington and Los Angeles. All three markets have seen appreciation of more than 70% since the beginning of the decade.
At the other end, Las Vegas, where prices are essentially flat to where they were in 2000, and Detroit, where home values have declined 28% since the turn of the century.
