Passfaces Puts A Face On Security

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Passfaces Corp., a British-American start-up, has introduced a cognometric online authentication system that requires credit union and bank customers to remember a series of faces before they can sign on to their accounts.

Passfaces asks users to remember a series of faces in a collection of mug shots-as many as nine series or as few as three.

Users pick their assigned "secret" face from each set to gain access to a secure system or Website. Retention rates are very high because people tend to recognize a familiar face, even if they forget the name that goes with it.

The Passfaces Financial 3.0 adds a JavaScript client interface that extends the use of Passfaces to all web browsers without requiring any user download or software installation.

This enables easy deployment to all users via desktops, laptops, kiosks and smart phones, such as the Palm Treo.

The cognometric system complies with new federal standards for multi-factor authentication for all online transactions by year-end.
