LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – A thief who used a stolen skid loader to pry loose an ATM then tried to roll down a hill to break it open ended up crashing down that same hill and trapping himself until police arrived.

The 49-year-old male suspect, whose name has not been released by Leavenworth police, used the skid loader to steal the 3,000-pound ATM from Frontier Credit Union, and then attempted to drop the machine down the embankment in order to get to the cash. Instead, the thief ended up riding down the 50-foot hill inside the skid loader, and was still inside the machine when police arrived.

“It makes it easier when you let go of it. That way you don’t go with it,” said Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens told local media. The man was treated for injuries and is now in custody.
