Two Pennsylvania credit unions that lost their sprawling community charters in a court challenge last year have received new ones that are roughly half the initial size.
The National Credit Union Administration said last week that it has granted AmeriChoice Federal Credit Union in Mechanicsburg and New Cumberland Federal Credit Union community charters spanning three counties.
AmeriChoice can serve 510,000 residents in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties. New Cumberland can serve 590,000 residents in Cumberland, Lebanon and Dauphin counties.
In recent years the two credit unions had won community charters encompassing 1.2 million people in six counties surrounding the state capital of Harrisburg, as did Members 1st Federal Credit Union in Mechanicsburg.
But after a challenge led by the American Bankers Association, a federal court judge said the charters were too broad and ordered them to be set aside.
Members 1st has reverted to its previous charter encompassing more than 1,000 select groups.
