CONYERS, Ga. -- Three people were sentenced to federal prison yesterday on charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft after they failed to steal $120,000 from a 93-year-old member of Georgia United CU.
One of the defendants stole the elderly member’s wallet while she was shopping, then shared the victim's debit card number, pin, account numbers and personal information with the other two accomplices.
Using the victim's account numbers and personal information, the defendants attempted through various means to obtain the more than $120,000 in funds that were in the victim's accounts at the credit union, according to authorities. When the victim and her family discovered the fraud, they reported it to the credit union.
The three suspects, Carlos Garcia, 36, Danyez Hines, 21, and Samantha Johnson, 38, were sentenced to between two year and six years in prison.
