FORT WORTH, Texas – Increasing numbers of credit unions and banks are tying unauthorized transactions on customers’ accounts to a data breach at OmniAmerican Bank, a credit union-turned-bank.
Authorities said employees at Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter with accounts at Fort Worth Community CU who used the OmniAmerican ATM at the local Naval Air Station reported their accounts compromised last week. Customers/members of Navy FCU, Bank of America and USAA who used the OmniAmerican ATM also have reported unauthorized transactions on their accounts.
The former credit union, which converted to a mutual savings bank in January 2006, reported a data breach in January in which hackers from Eastern Europe apparently accessed customer accounts and used the information to create fake debit cards. The bank has cancelled and reissued as many as 40,000 Visa debit cards as a precaution.
