Another of the credit union pioneers whose work in organizing CUs in the first half of the 20th century is often overlooked. Tom Doig was working for the Post Office in 1923 when he became involved in helping to organize Minneapolis Postal Employees CU, the first in the state. In 1925 he helped to get CU legislation passed in the state, in addition to helping organize the Minnesota CU League, recognized as the first self-sustaining league in the U.S.
In 1930, Doig joined the Credit Union National Extension Bureau as an assistant to Roy Bergengren and was charged with organizing CUs in five Midwest States.
After helping draft CUNA's Constitution in 1934, he was named assistant managing director of the organization in 1935, and succeeded Roy Bergengren as managing director from 1945 to 1955.
