WASHINGTON - The Treasury Department conducted its 27th meeting of the Bank Secrecy Act Advisory Group (BSAAG) during which it reviewed a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) study on Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs). CUNA, which is a member of Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, was represented during the meeting by Associate General Counsel Lilly Thomas.

Discussion at the meeting centered on just how much of a burden compliance with CTR filing rules has become, along with suggestions for methods to reduce the burden without adversely affecting the effectiveness of the rules in fighting terrorism. As part of its ongoing, 15-month study, GAO has been examining whether financial institutions have been using all the available exemptions that are available to them.
