United Educational CU Promotes Mexico’s Matriculas Cards As Valid IDs

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – United Educational CU is partnering with the Consul of Mexico in Detroit to promote the acceptance of consular identification cards, known as matriculas, as valid identification for Mexicans living in the U.S.

The $105 million credit union is among a growing number of U.S. credit unions that accept matriculas as valid IDs for membership.

“Rigid identification policies have served as a barrier for some in our community to obtain fair access to financial products and services,” said Fran Godfrey, president of United Educational. “This is one of the changes we’ve put in place to make credit union membership accessible to everyone.”

The credit union said the agreement will serve as a model for serving the growing Mexican population in Michigan and elsewhere in the U.S.
