US Economy Sends Ripple Effect Across Globe

BUCHAREST, Romania – The economic issues in the United States are getting the attention of credit unions in other countries, as well.

During the World Council of Credit Unions’ (WOCCU) European Credit Union Technical Congress, here, much of the attention anticipated a “ripple effect” of the larger crisis in the U.S. The meeting, which included about 150 delegates from 10 countries, along with representatives of the Romanian government and central bank, was told economies in Europe and elsewhere likely will feel the effects of a slow economy throughout 2009 and into 2010.

“This is very important for us in Eastern Europe,” said Grzegorz Bierecki, president of the National Association of Cooperative Savings & Credit Unions (NACSCU), Poland’s credit union trade group.
