OMAHA, Neb. – A former head of accounting at First Nebraska Educators & Employee Groups CU pleaded guilty yesterday to embezzling $1.3 million during a 15-year scheme.
Caroline Domanski, 62, was vice president of accounting when she created fake entries into various ledgers to conceal cash withdrawals from the credit union's vault. She told tellers she was withdrawing cash from the vault to disperse at the credit union's branches throughout Omaha.
She also endorsed checks and cashed them for her personal use.
Domanski, who worked at the credit union since 1976, told investigators the theft occurred over seven to 10 years. However, federal prosecutors said in court yesterday that it occurred from July 1993 through May 2, 2008.
She is expected to be sent to prison when she is sentenced in March.
