- ALEXANDRIA, Va.(05/21/01) -- Jane Walters, one of three NCUA regional directorsdisciplined last year for her role in the agency's hiring scandal,made a comeback last week when the NCUA Board appointed herdirector of the agency's southwest Region Five. Walters has beenserving as interim director of the Austin, Texas-based region sinceFebruary, when Len Skiles was appointed the agency's executivedirector. Walters was demoted from her job as west coast Region Sixdirector to assistant director in midwest Region Four last Marchbecause of her role in the hiring scandal in which several NCUAofficials skirted civil service rules in order to expand theagency's minority and female workforce. Walters has served withNCUA since 1981 and was the agency's first female regionaldirector, originally serving as head of midAtlantic RegionTwo.
