POST FALLS, Idaho-According to one economist, credit unions should see a down economy as an opportunity and not an excuse.
CUNA Mutual chief economist Dave Colby told 100 attendees at the Mountain Regional Credit Union Roundtable here that CUs have survived and thrived during past recessions and this one is no different.
He said that CUs should focus on existing members first to gain deeper wallet share and use this opportunity to educate members on what their credit unions can do for them in lending, savings and financial education. In turn, those members will become "ambassadors" to the rest of the community and be the "best marketing tool you can possibly have," Colby contended.
