What Should A Board Orientation Program Include?

Dan Clark offered this list of critical areas a credit union should cover in an in-house orientation program for new board members:

Processing Content

* Bylaws.

* The legal duties of the board and of the individual director.

* The history of the organization.

* Partners and major relationships.

* What your credit union expects of each director.

* Gaining Knowledge from the financial reports.

* Your governance polices–roles of the board, committees and management.

* Bond and insurance.

* The credit union’s plans.

* Previous board decisions.

* Legal issues and insights.

* Introductions to senior staff.

* Tour the office.

The order of these is general. Although the above sequence has some relevance, the exact order in not as critical as delivering it. Each credit union may find a sequence that works well for them. What may matter most to you is the availability of resources to provide information and guidance, the presence of legal or regulatory issues, or upcoming agenda items.
