Widespread Phishing Scam Hits Texas CUs

TEMPLE, Texas – Five credit unions here and in Waco, Texas, are reporting a widespread phishing expedition by scammers, who are contacting members with messages that plastic cards have been deactivated and then asking for account information in order to restore service.

The mass text message was sent just after most credit unions affected had closed on Friday. Members who returned a call got a recording asking for their account information. The credit unions reported that at least a few members fell for the ruse.

Affected were members of First Central CU, Genco CU, Educators CU, Scott & White Employees CU and Texell CU.
