The grant is part of the Gates Foundation's Financial Services for the Poor initiative, which is working with a variety of partners to use technology and innovation to bring quality, affordable financial services to the poor in the developing world.

The technology supported by the funding will allow the Council to supply rural areas of Kenya where there are no credit union branches with financial services, such as savings accounts.

WOCCU has been working with the Gates Foundation on a three-year program to expand credit union services in Kenya, Rwanda and Columbia.
