The World Council of Credit Unions announced the theme for the 2016 International Credit Union (ICU) Day — "The Authentic Difference." WOCCU said the theme was chosen because it represents the differences that make credit unions unique as a financial institution.
ICU takes place on October 20 this year and it has been held annually on the third Thursday of October since 1948. More than 217 million members and 57,000 CUs worldwide will be taking part in the event, WOCCU said.
"In addition to community commitment and positive economic and social change, we put people before profit to provide all members with affordable financial services," World Council President/CEO Brian Branch said, "This is the authentic difference that makes a real impact on our world."
World Council hopes to add 50 million new members to the global CU movement by 2020, one of the organization's goals in their Vision 2020 plan. WOCCU said it believes this annual event has the "potential to raise awareness of credit union benefits and ultimately attract more members worldwide."
World Council encourages CU representatives to utilize the Twitter hashtag #ICUDay when celebrating the event on social media.
