Two Members Win New Homes
FLINT, Mich.-For the second year in a row, Dort FCU has substantially brightened two families' holidays by giving them new homes. Dort FCU's Home for the Holidays Home Giveaway Contest, awarded homes to two working mothers who were selected from among 100 applicants. The mortgage-free homes were renovated and brought up to code by the credit union.
The winners included Candice Garner, who has four children and won a home in Flint Township, and Rockie Hartley, who has two children and won a home in Mt. Morris Township, Mich. Both families were driven to their new homes by limo and followed by an entourage of sponsors, supporters and media.
CBS Report Boosts CULookup.com
ARLINGTON, Va.-NAFCU's credit union locator, CULookup.com, was featured on the CBS "Early Show" as part of a piece by Financial Contributor Vera Gibbons, who extolled the virtues of credit unions. NAFCU said the program was viewed by more than 2-million viewers.
NM, VA Leagues Paying Rebates
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-For the fifth consecutive year, the Credit Union Association of New Mexico has frozen dues, and this year is adding a bonus: a rebate. The CUANM is sending a rebate to its 50 affiliated CUs based on adjusted 2009 net income. In Virginia, meanwhile, the Virginia Credit Union League said it will return $300,000 in dues payments to its member CUs, representing a rebate equal to 20% of its 2009 dues payment. The league credited the sale of stock it held in a shared branching network for creating the "windfall" that made the rebate possible. The rebate is the first ever paid by the Virginia league.
Account Raises $45K For Veterans Groups
FAIRHAVEN, Mass.-Local and national veterans' organizations have received more than $45,000 in donations from First Citizens' FCU's Hero Program. The Hero Account program give advantageous checking and savings rates, discounted personal, auto and home equity loan rates and reduced closing fees on mortgages to any person currently serving or having served in any branch of the military. The credit union pledged to donate $50 to approved veterans' organizations for each account opened.
2012 'Int'l Year of Cooperatives'
NEW YORK-The United Nations' General Assembly has voted to make 2012 the International Year of Cooperatives. The proclamation recognizes the important role cooperatives of all types, including credit unions, play in strengthening and supporting global economic and social development, according to the World Council of Credit Unions, Madison. Wis.
