Board Member Celebrates Centennial
LOS ANGELES-California Bear CU board member Sherman Grancell recently celebrated his 100th birthday and his 58th year of service on the board. Grancell, a founding member of UCLA, became a board member at California Bear CU while working as a judge and deputy commission for the state's Workman's Compensation Board in 1952. He stayed on with the board even after he quit his job with the state to found a law firm in 1979.
Beacon Ready To Navigate Hispanic Opportunity
DALLAS-Beacon FCU is the state's first CU to complete the Hispanic Opportunity Navigator, a tool created by Coopera Consulting to provide financial institutions with more insight in serving the Hispanic population. The Texas league collaborated with Coopera to make the tool available to the state's CUs. In addition to evaluating Beacon's cultural disposition, the HON also examined its operational readiness, the market's demographics, Beacon's branch environment, and key financial indicators of the CU's existing Hispanic membership.
Latino CUs Recognize Ensweiler
FARMERS BRANCH, Texas-Texas Credit Union League President and CEO Dick Ensweiler has received from the Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP) the 2010 Leadership and Vision Award. Ensweiler was selected in honor of his steadfast commitment toward empowering the Hispanic community. In 1999, Ensweiler and the league created the Texas/Mexico Credit Union Relationship Committee, designed to strengthen relationships with the largest CU in Mexico, Caja Popular Mexicana (CPM). In 2000, Ensweiler was part of the effort to develop the International Remittance Network (IRnet). He also led a delegation that met with then Mexico President Vicente Fox to discuss service to immigrants and other issues.
NACUSO Regional Meeting Coming Soon
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.-NACUSO's first regional meeting series event will take place March 10 at Northwest FCU in Herndon, Va. Themed "Using Collaboration Strategies and Networked Business Design to Grow and Sustain Your Credit Union," NACUSO General Counsel Guy Messick will be the presenter.

Foundation Provides 0% Construction Loan
RALEIGH, N.C.-The SECU Foundation, founded by State Employees' CU here, is providing a 0%, $500,000 construction loan for a new With Friends Residential Maternity Home in Gaston County. The loan, which was funded in partnership with the state's housing finance agency, will save With Friends between $30,000-$40,000. The non-profit institute serves youth who are homeless, runaways or in some other crisis situation. This new home will benefit pregnant teens or parenting girls with babies who are homeless or displaced and providing plans for housing, education, employment and child-related services.
CUES Partners With Currency Marketing
MADISON, Wis.-CUES has partnered with Currency Marketing, Chilliwack, B.C., which specialties in social media, to develop what it says will be an innovative new program for emerging leaders. CUES plans to release additional details in April.
