Five Best Practices Identified
MADISON, Wis.-Five CUs were named winners of Best Practices Awards from the CUNA Operations, Sales & Service (OpSS) Council. Winners included Oregon Community CU in Eugene, Ore. in the Sales & Service Management category; Travis CU in Vacaville, Calif., and SouthPoint FCU in Sleepyeye Minn. in the Sales & Service Management category; WestStar CU in Las Vegas and FedChoice FCU in Lanham, Nev. in the Miscellaneous category.
Hoefer To Retire From Dupaco
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Dupaco Community CU's Bob Hoefer has announced his retirement after 47 years with the credit union. Hoefer will retire Feb. 12, 2012, and will continue to serve as assistant to the president for special projects. Hoefer joined what was then the $3.4-million Dupaco Employees CU in 1964 as a full-time computer programmer. He became president and CEO in 1971 and has overseen growth to $955 million in assets. Dupaco has named Chief Operating Officer Joe Hearn, a 25-year veteran of the CU, to succeed Hoefer.
40 Young Pro's In Int'l Exchange
MADISON, Wis. - Up to 40 young CU professionals from the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and the U.S. will participate in the new World Council of Credit Unions-backed The Professional Fellows Program. Funded in part by a grant from the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the program will enable 10 young professionals each from the Dominican Republic and Guatemala to interact with 20 of their counterparts in Iowa and North Carolina. FoolProof Oklahoma To Debut
WASHINGTON--Two Oklahoma CUs, Tulsa Teachers and WEOKIE, have formed "FoolProof Oklahoma," a statewide project to ramp up the quality of financial literacy instruction in schools. All teachers in the state are being offered the web-driven financial literacy curriculum that meets 100% of Oklahoma's "Passport to Financial Literacy" requirements. WGE FCU Now PrimeTrust
MUNCIE, Ind.--WGE FCU is changing its name to PrimeTrust Financial FCU. The $142-million CU said the move reflects its broader charter.
Tech Council Names Exec Committee
MADISON, Wis. - The CUNA Technology Council has elected its executive committee. Rudy Pereira, SVP with Alliant CU in Chicago, will step down as chair but will remain on the exec committee. Heather Moshier, EVP with San Diego County CU, is the new chair. Jeff Johnson, SVP with Baxter CU in Vernon Hills, Ill., is the new vice chair; Chad Graves, SVP with Ent FCU, Colorado Springs, Colo. is the new 2nd vice-chair. Incumbents Robert Reh of Nassau Financial FCU and John Best of Wescom CU were re-elected to the board, while Todd Dauchy of Corning FCU was elected to his first term.
New England FCU Gets Healthy
WILLISTON, Vt.-As part of an effort to provide a healthy workplace, New England FCU's Worksite Wellness Committee has created a "Walk This Way" initiative, which has a goal of increasing awareness of and engagment in daily exercise. The IT departmet created an Intranet site on which participants can track the steps they have walked. The goal: to "walk to Washington, D.C. and beyond." NEFCU has provided staff with pedometers and is also offering prizes for hitting milestones. To date, staff have walked 56 million steps. In addition, it has replaced existing vending machines with machines offering fresher, healthier alternatives.
Four More CUs In Mergers
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-The $95-million Florida State University CU has absorbed the $17-million Tree Capital CU, Perry, Fla., via merger. Tree Capital CU will keep its name but become a division of Florida State University CU. In Lake Jackson, Texas, meanwhile, $80-million Bluebonnet Credit Union is merging into $1.6-billion TDECU.
Two CUs Name New CEOs
OTTUMWA, Iowa-- Community 1st CU has named Philip Van Mersbergen as its new president and CEO. Van Mersbergen had previously served as CFO. In Rockport, Ill., meanwhile, Janet Schuler has been named president of $19-million Canals & Trails Credit Union.
Carlson Shares Insights In Maine
FREEPORT, Maine-Political Commentator Tucker Carlson, shared his observations with the Maine league's Legisltiave Forum. After discussing the 2012 president race, Carlson also noted, "I hate dealing with banks and, the circumstances of the past three or four years, have proven that credit unions do things the right away so I think the future is bright for credit unions."
