McCants New CUES Chair
LAS VEGAS-CUES elected its board officers for 2011-12 during its CEO/Executive Team Network here. Elected were: Chairman, Lary McCants, CEO of IBM Southeast EFCU in Boca Raton, Fla.; Vice Chairman/Chairman Elect, Teresa Freeborn, CEO of Xceed Financial CU in El Segundo, Calif.; Treasurer, Robert D. Ramirez, CEO of Vantage West CU in Tucson, Ariz., and Secretary, Gerrianne D. Burks, CEO of Northwest FCU, Herndon, Va.
Poll Reflects Well On Credit Unions
MADISON, Wis.-A new Harris Poll found that 87% of consumers surveyed said they are extremely/very likely to continue as members, significantly outpacing that of a number of large banks, including Bank of America (40%), JP Morgan Chase (46%), and Wells Fargo (54%). In addition, 74% of members said they have a trustworthy relationship with their CU, vs. 25% of BofA customers.

Excellence Awards Are Now Open

LESPFCU Marks 25th Anniversary
NEW YORK CITY-A quarter century after it was founded to fill a void when a bank pulled out of the market, Lower East Side People's FCU is celebrating its 25th anniversary. LESPFCU has grown into the largest CDCU in New York City, serving the underserved in Lower East Side and Harlem. Its membership is largely comprised of minority, female-headed households, in which English is the second language.
Dethlefsen To Retire From Island FCU
HAUPPAGUE, N.Y.-Bob Dethlefsen, CEO of Island FCU, has announced his retirement. Dethlefsen joined the CU in 1977 and was named CEO in 1980, during which he has overseen growth from $17 million in assets to nearly $800 million. Dethlefsen served on numerous boards, and in 1985 received NAFCU's Professional of the Year Award.
Outstanding Councils Are Named
MADISON, Wis.-CUES has honored nine of its Councils with Outstanding Council Awards. Winners include, in the 1-to-100 Member Category: CUES Iowa Council, CUES Northeast Council and CUES Utah Council; in the 101-to-200 member category: CUES Alabama Council, CUES Delaware Valley Council and CUES Oregon/Washington Council; and in the 200-plus member category: CUES Florida Council, CUES Michigan Council and CUES Rocky Mountain Council. Third Generation CEO Is Named
KANSAS CITY-The $450-million Mazuma CU has named CFO Brandon Michaels to be its next president, making him what is believed to be the first third-generation credit union CEO. Michaels, former CFO at San Francisco Fire CU and before that an FDIC examiner, is the son of Diana Michaels, president of Western Healthcare FCU in Concord, Calif., and his grandmother was CEO of then-Avon Refinery FCU in Concord. Michaels began his career filing loan papers for his grandmother when he was 12 years old.
Northwest FCU's Burns To Retire
HERNDON, Va.-Gerrianne "Winky" Burks, president of Northwest FCU, said she will retire after 40 years NFCU, the past five as its chief executive. The retirement is set for the end of 2012. Burks joined the CU as a teller in 1971 and has held numerous positions over her career, while also serving on numerous boards.
Loyalty Drivers Are Examined
MADISON, Wis.-The CUNA Marketing & Business Development Council has released a white paper, "The Essential Drivers of Member Loyalty in Credit Unions: Adding Value to the Net Promoter Score." Authored by Neil Goldman, the paper explores the service qualities that help foster growth and create lasting organizational success. The paper delves into the Net Promoter Score (NPS), while readers are introduced to the formative SERVQUAL model of customer satisfaction as a framework for understanding the drivers of NPS and how to use it to create an excellent member experience that inspires loyalty. Money Matters Is Launched
CHICAGO-Alliant Credit Union is holding a contest called "Money Matters" with a grand prize of $1,000. The program is part of ACU's Tip of the Week program, and collects tips on helping people reach their financial goals.
