NCUA Schedules Workshops
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA said it will hold 15 free training workshops for CUs this year, during which reps from its Office of Small CU Initiatives will provide info on the on examination process, strategic planning, fraud detection, leadership and fair lending compliance. Representatives from CUES, REAL Solutions, CUNA Mutual and the National Federation of CDCUs will also participate. Workshops are scheduled for: March 22 in Richmond, Va.; April 4 in Philadelphia and Chicago; April 25 in Portland, Ore.; April 27 in New York City; May 2 in Detroit; May 18 in Denver; June 22 in Houston; June 28 in Minneapolis; July 20 in Honolulu; July 25 in Pittsburgh; Aug. 15 in Memphis; Sept. 12 in Independence, Ohio; Sept. 28 in Buffalo, N.Y., and Oct. 17 in New Orleans. Cal/Nev League Wins Awards
ONTARIO, Calif.-The California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues recently earned two 2012 MarCom Awards from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for its 2011 annual meeting and convention marketing campaign and a Credit Union Digest feature article.
Two CU HQs Won't Do
HOOVER, Ala.-Alabama Telco CU sold its former headquarters building here to Northwestern Mutual Life for $2.1 million. The $600-million credit union moved out of the 30,000-square-foot building last year when it moved to new offices in the former Harbert Corp. building. Meanwhile, in Harrisburg, Penn., Pennsylvania State Employees CU has put its offices on the market for $9 million. The $4-billion PSECU is spending $71 million on a much larger, 230,000-square-foot facility on 47 acres about two miles from the present HQ.
Tower Acquiring Coast Guard CU
LAUREL, Md.-Tower FCU has agreed to acquire ailing U.S. Coast Guard Community CU, a $34-million, privately insured Baltimore CU, in a merger. USCGCCU reported losses four years in a row.
United FCU Named As 'Outstanding'
ST. JOSEPH, Mich.-United FCU has been named Outstanding Credit Union of the Year by the Michigan CU League, and was recognized for outstanding achievements in the areas of financial strength and performance, new and improved services to members, new activities or programs, financial literacy and more. In 2012 United FCU became the first FCU to buy a state-chartered bank.
Pair of Pennsylvanians Honored
HARRISBURG, Penn.-The Pennsylvania CU Association has named as winners of its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Awards: Dave Ackerman, CEO with USX FCU in Pittsburgh as Outstanding Credit Union Professional of the Year, and Dr. Ross McFarland, Treasurer with Tri County Area FCU, Pottstown, as Outstanding CU Volunteer of the Year. Ackerman has been in CUs for 25 years an active in both CU and non-CU endeavors; McFarland has been active as a CU volunteer for 34 years.
Trio Enters CU House Hall of Leaders
WASHINGTON-Gail Krall, president/CEO of Minnesota Power ECU, and Bill Winter of St. Cloud FCU, have been inducted into the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders here in recognition of their contributions to credit unions. Also inducted was Ken Bradshaw, president/CEO of Liberty First Credit Union in Lincoln, Neb.
Defense CU Council Hits The Big 5-0
WASHINGTON-The Defense Credit Union Council is marking its 50th anniversary with a year-long observance. The DCUC has numerous events scheduled for 2013 to mark the event, including sponsorship of sister race to the CU Cherry Blossom Run in Kuwait, support for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, and its 50th annual meeting at The Greenbriar in August. Kenya Thanks U.S. Credit Unions
WASHINGTON-Kenya's ambassador to the U.S., Elkanah Odembo, recognized 60 U.S. CU reps and the World Council during a reception at the Kenyan Embassy in Washington for their work to improve Kenya's economic stability and for providing assistance to Busia Compassionate Centre, an orphanage in western Kenya.
