Sign Up To Intern In Brazil
MADISON, Wis.-World Council of Credit Unions is calling U.S. credit union professionals to apply for an intensive, two-week credit union internship in Brazil, Jan. 12-25, 2014, through its International CU Leadership Program. A committee will select 12 candidates to participate in the scholarship program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State and covers all expenses but airfare. The application deadline is Sept. 27.

Metsger Joins NCUA Board
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Rick Metsger has taken the oath of office and become the 20th member of the NCUA board. He fills the seat vacated by Gigi Hyland.
Carolinas' Leagues Plan Merger
COLUMBIA, S.C. and RALEIGH, N.C.-Affiliated credit unions in North and South Carolina have voted to consolidate their respective state leagues to create the Carolinas Credit Union League, which begins operation on Jan. 1. NCCUL President John Radebaugh will serve as president of the CCUL. SCCUL CEO Steve Fowler is retiring.
Wegner Awards Honorees Announced
MADISON, Wis.-The National Credit Union Foundation has named Sarah Canepa Bang, president of CO-OP Shared Branching-FSCC, LLC, as the winner of the 2014 Herb Wegner Award for Individual Achievement and Tim Haegelin, retired CEO of Generations FCU as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Canepa Bang, who started with CUNA in 1983, has held positions with the Oregon and Massachusetts CU leagues, and also established a two-year associate degree program in CU management through Mt. Hood Community College.
Haegelin is a 49-year veteran of he CU industry, most recently at the helm of Generations FCU, which piloted the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and developed products and services designed to break the significant hold that payday lenders have within the community.
The awards will be presented at the Herb Wegner Memorial Awards dinner hosted by NCUF at the Grand Hyatt Washington Feb. 24.
NCUF Awards 16 BizKid$ Grants
MADISON, Wis.-The National CU Foundation has approved 16 new Biz Kid$ grants for 2013, totaling $124,961. Among some of the grant projects: Maps CU in Salem, Ore., will work in partnership with Western Oregon University's College of Education to incorporate Biz Kid$ into the curriculum of Elementary Social Studies Methods course; STAR CU in Madison, Wis., will create an Entrepreneurship Club to teach teens at the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County about entrepreneurship, and Cornerstone CU Foundation in Farmers Branch, Texas will create a Biz Kid$ Teacher Training and Entrepreneur Contest pilot program to show educators how to teach the Biz Kid$ program.
Two CUs Have New Names
MENLO PARK, Calif.-The $103-million Tyco FCU, which serves Tyco International, has changed its name to Reach FCU. Weber Marketing Group developed the brand. The CU serves seven select groups: Tyco, ADT, TE Connectivity, Covidien, Elo Touch Solutions, Atkore and Pentair. Meanwhile, in Salem, Ore., the $100-million Oregon Employees FCU has changed its name to Heritage Grove Employees FCU. Marketing firm Raoust+Partners assisted in the new branding.
New CEOs Are Named At Four CUs
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-The $1.9-billion Navy Army Community CU has named Sarah O'Brien as its new president and CEO. O'Brien, who had previously been EVP/COO, succeeds the retiring Wayne Vann. In Elgin, Ill., Kane County Teachers CU has named Mike Lee as its new CEO. Lee was previously EVP with Alloya Corporate. In Missoula, Mont., Jack Lawson has been named president/CEO of $400-million Missoula FCU. Lawson was previously COO at Self-Help FCU in California.
Golden Mirror Winners Named
MADISON, Wis.-CUES has named the winners of its 2013 Golden Mirror Awards competition. Out of 426 entries, four won top honors, including: GMA Pinnacle Award: Thomas Kane, CEO of Fort Campbell FCU, Clarksville, Tenn. GMA Best Campaign: Roy MacKinnon of First Entertainment CU, Hollywood, Calif. GMA Rookie of the Year: Christa Peck of School Employees CU of Washington, Seattle, and GMA Golden Shoestring: Anna Wohrman of Orion FCU, Memphis.
Deadline For CUs For Kids Funds
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.-CO-OP Financial Services said the deadline to apply for CO-OP Miracle Match grants for 2013 is Sept. 30. CO-OP Financial Services makes matching funds of up to $1 million available to CUs, chapters and leagues sponsoring CUs for Kids events.
