Credit Union Veteran To Retire At Year End

PASADENA, Calif.-After more than 36 years in the credit union industry, Charlene Bowman, CEO of Pasadena Service Federal Credit Union (PSFCU), will be retiring Dec. 31.

She began her career in the credit union industry in 1972, when she became the "do everything" person at the one-man office of Parco Employees FCU in Ontario, California, which had assets of $130,000. She then joined Pasadena Service in 1985, where she helped the CU triple in assets.

Bowman said she intends to serve as a credit union volunteer and to teach college business courses.

National Desjardins Winners Announced

MADISON, Wis.-Winners of the 2008 national Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, recognizing leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy, were recently selected by CUNA.

Named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, the awards recognize activities supporting the personal finance education of young members and nonmembers.

This year's Desjardins Award winners include: Arapahoe CU, Centennial, Colo.; LA DOTD FCU, Denham Springs, La.; Rogue FCU, Medford, Ore.; Sonoma County Grange CU, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Credit Union Association of New York and Maine Credit Union League.

Holiday Card Earns Recognition By Hallmark

WATERFORD, Mich.-A BestSource CU employee's holiday card design (shown at right) made it to the Top 20 in a contest being held by Hallmark Card Corp.

BestSource CU's Stephanie Ryan holiday card design was selected by Hallmark as one of the finalists in its nationwide contest for cards inspired by (RED), a charity benefiting people living with AIDS in Africa.

The cards can be purchased online with 8% of the proceeds donated to (RED). Consumers can vote for the winning card online. The finalist with the highest number of combined votes and card purchases will be awarded $1,000 cash, a trip to (RED) headquarters in New York, and a matching donation made to the Gobal Fund in the winner's name.

MaPS CU Names New CEO

SALEM Ore.-Marion and Polk Schools CU said its chief operations officer Mark Zook will be promoted to CEO in January when current CEO Daniel Penn retires. The $300-million CU has hired Oregon Employees CEO Kevin Cole to be its new chief operations officer. Cole has a long background with credit unions, having been director of lending at Central Valley CU, then CEO of Eagle CU.

Velocity CU CEO Larry Strong Passes Away

AUSTIN, Texas-Velocity CU CEO Larry Strong died unexpectedly Nov. 23.

Strong served the $425-million CU for more than 30 years, assuming the role of president and CEO in 1988. During his tenure, he oversaw the name change from Austin Municipal CU to Velocity CU. Strong stepped down as president in January but maintained an active role as CEO until his death.
