Herb Wegner Award Nominations Due June 19

MADISON, Wis.-The deadline is June 19 for nominations for the highest national honors in CUs, the Herb Wegner Memorial Memorial Awards. Presented by the National CU Foundation, nominations are being accepted for the Individual Achievement Award, the Oustanding Organization/ Program Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented Feb. 22, 2010, at the Grand Hyatt Washington.

NASCUS Adds New Sessions To Upcoming Mtg.

ARLINGTON, Va.-NASCUS recently added sessions to its annual State System Summit, August 20-22 in Boston, on critical accounting issues and strategies for success in today's mortgage lending environment. During "Credit Union Taxation Update-Life After Community First," Kevin Fincher of Clifton Gunderson will provide attendees with an update on unrelated business income tax (UBIT) in light of the recent favorable jury decision. In addition, the Summit will feature a half-day symposium on Meeting Today's Mortgage Lending Challenges.

Book Celebrates CUs' 100th Anniversary

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA has published a hardcover coffee-table book marking the first century of CUs in the U.S. "For the People for 100 Years" begins with the formation of the first U.S. CU, now known as St. Mary's Bank, in Manchester, N.H. The chapters, organized by decade and filled with historical photographs, chronicle major events and legislative victories in the credit union timeline from 1908 to today. Attendees of the 2009 America's Credit Union Conference and Expo, June 21-24 in Boston, will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

NAFCU Launches Online Training Program

WASHINGTON-NAFCU has launched its new online volunteer and staff training program at www.nafcu.org/training. The site includes 14 training modules - 10 for volunteers and four for new employees - that cover the essential elements of the Bank Secrecy Act and asset liability training as well as overviews of the regulation and examination of credit unions. The program is offered on an annual subscription basis with a special introductory rate until Aug. 28.

Peppers Elected CUNA Mutual Chairman

MADISON, Wis.-Alan Peppers, president/CEO of Westerra Credit Union in Denver Colo., has been elected as the new chairman of CUNA Mutual, replacing Loretta Burd who remains on the board, while Joseph J. Gasper, retired president/COO of Nationwide Insurance, has been elected as vice chairman. Gasper was re-elected to a three-year term on the board, as were Robert J. Marzec, retired audit partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers; M. Victoria Wood Miller, retired EVP/CFO with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Randy M. Smith, president/CEO, Randolph-Brooks FCU.
