Brazile Keynotes NAFCU Congressional Caucus
WASHINGTON-Donna Brazile, a veteran Democratic strategist and recognized as one of the "100 Most Powerful Women" of Washington by Washingtonian magazine, will be the keynote speaker at NAFCU's 2009 Annual Congressional Caucus at the Grand Hyatt Washington, Sept. 20-23. A syndicated columnist, Brazile is author of "Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics."

CUES Releases Manuals On Cost Control
MADISON, Wis.-CUES is releasing a new series of cost- control manuals dedicated to boosting CUs bottom line, the association announced. The CUES Cost Control Series will focus on facilities, marketing, payments, benefits and HR-the areas of a CU business that carry the largest expenses. The first in the series, focusing on facilities, is available in PDF form now. The rest of the series will be released throughout the month of July.
Global Fin. Lit. Summit Features CU Speaker
WASHINGTON-David Mooney, CEO of Chicago-based Alliant CU, spoke on the benefits of financially literate consumers at the first Global Financial Literacy Summit here. Financially literate consumers can keep the economy healthier over the long run by reducing excessive borrowing, defaults and bankruptcies thereby tempering the business and credit cycles. Mooney pointed out that Alliant CU is doing its best to educate future consumers as employee volunteers have conducted more than 250 free classes for middle school students over the past three years.
ACUMA Hosts Webcast On Mortgages
LAS VEGAS-A webcast on mortgage opportunities resulting from the American Recovery and Investment Act has been scheduled for July 7 by the American Credit Union Mortgage Association (ACUMA). That Act includes a tax credit of up to $8,000 for qualified, first-time homebuyers, providing loan applications are started by the end of November. The webcast will focus on a number of related issues, and be facilitated by mortgage expert Tracy Ashfield.

Smith Wins NC League's Mark Of Excellence
RALEIGH, N.C.-Local Government FCU President Maurice Smith was given the Mark of Excellence Award at this year's annual meeting of the North Carolina Credit Union League.
The award recognizes "sustained leadership among people" the state's credit union community and can only be given to individuals with 25 or more years of service in the CU industry.
His credit union was also ranked as the 26th top small business in North Carolina by Business Leader Media for its achievements both as a business and as a leader in the community at large.
