MADISON, Wis.-CUNA is seeking nominations for the 2007 Community Credit Union of the Year Award, sponsored by CUNA. The award honors a community credit union that exemplifies the ideals of the credit union movement while serving as a positive influence in its field of service, and was originally established by the National Association of Community Credit Unions. Entrants must submit all required information no later than Aug. 24. The winner will be announced during the CUNA Community Credit Union Conference, Oct. 15-18, in Uncasville, Conn. Award guidelines and entry forms are available online at training.cuna.org by entering "CUCCT07" in the event finder search box.

REAL Solutions Expands To Conn.

WALLINGFORD, Conn.-Twenty one credit unions here, along with the Connecticut league itself, have become the latest to sign on with the REAL solutions program funded by the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF). That program trains credit unions to provide "innovative new financial services that low-wealth families can afford. In striving to reach low-wealth families, the program seeks to help consumers with low, moderate and middle incomes who have been unable to build significant savings or assets."

Alaska League Draws 100

SITKA, Alaska-The Alaska Credit Union League (ACUL) held its annual meeting in this town along its southwest coast and drew a crowd of approximately 100 people. Despite the somewhat remote location, the meeting drew a number of well-known presenters as speakers, including Juri Valdov, CEO of Northwest FCU and past chairman of CUNA; Joann Johnson, chairman of the NCUA Board; Dr. Jim Likens, president and dean of Western CUNA Management School, and Amy Rapp and Steve Shrader from WesCorp. Topics covered included financial literacy, legislative action, mergers and conversions, an economic outlook, strategic planning. The ACUL represents Alaska credit unions at the state level and has been run as an all volunteer state league since 2001, operating without full-time paid staff. Each year the league holds an annual meeting organized by one of the member credit unions.
