CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Deb Mclean, VP-marketing and business development at Carolina Postal Credit Union, has launched a blog aimed at credit union communicators. The blog can be found at http://marketingdivadeb.blogspot.com. McLean said the goal is to "stir the pot up a little," but also to serve as a resource and as a place to ask questions. The blog is not affiliated with Carolina Postal CU.

FinCen Issues SARS Guidance

WASHINGTON-The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has issued two sets of new guidance, on related to Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) filings, the other to law enforcement requests to maintain an account.

CU-Backed Law Helps Homeowners

AUGUSTA, Maine-Maine Gov. John Baldacci has signed into law a bill that had credit union backing and which is aimed at curbing predatory mortgage lending practices. The Homeowner Protection Act is also intended to curb foreclosures in the state. Among other things the act would restrict the amount of fees consumers could be charged; prevent lenders from offering subprime loans that a consumer can't afford to repay; ban predatory lending practices such as loan flipping, and protect consumer rights in court and make predatory lenders more legally accountable.

CUs Foot Bill For Teacher Workshops

PEWAUKEE, Wis.-Wisconsin CUs are sponsoring more than 50 teachers to attend summer workshops that will help them teach about personal finance. Over the course of three training sessions, collectively called the National Institute of Financial and Economic Literacy, teachers will learn about financial matters from professionals in the financial industry. The sessions also make lesson plans, curricula, teaching strategies and other materials available to educators, according to the Wisconsin CU League. The league reported that in 2005, Wisconsin high school students received a failing grade when tested on basic financial concepts.
