CUNA Urges NCUA To Freeze Pay

WASHINGTON-Citing the "belt tightening" going on at credit unions, and the Obama Administration's plan to freeze civilian federal workers' salaries for two years, CUNA is calling on NCUA to take similar action. In a letter to NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz, CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney wrote that whether or not the Obama proposal applies to NCUA, it should "agree at this time to implement a salary freeze to the fullest extent possible." NCUA recently announced it will be paying salary increases between 6% and 8% in 2011.

 

Bankers Roll Out New Website

WASHINGTON-The American Bankers Association has created a new website at ProudToBeABanker.ABA.com. The site is designed to show the ways banks contribute to their communities.

 

CUES Reports 1,000 New Members

MADISON, Wis.-CUES reported that a record 1,000 new CU employees have become CUES members as a part of its 2011 membership drive. By year-end, said CUES, membership totals will reach more than 8,500.

Michigan CUs Report Strong Growth

LANSING, Mich.-The Michigan CU league reported that the state's CUs through the first three quarters of 2010 have added 54,000 new members, had deposit growth of 7.3%, MBL growth of 22.9%, and ROA averaging 34 BPs.

 

Cherry Blossom Run Set For April 3

WASHINGTON-The 2011 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2011. It will mark the 10th year CUs have sponsored the race, which has raised more than $5 million for children's hospitals.

Members Commit $120M To Corp

MIDDLETOWN, Penn.-Mid-Atlantic Corporate FCU reported that its 650 member CUs have committed more than $120 million in capital to the corporate.

 

Reality Fair Set During GAC

Debit Surges Among Shoppers

DES MOINES, Iowa-The Members Group (TMG) has released Black Friday transaction data that shows a strong preference for debit among its clients' cardholders. The company reported that of the card transactions it processed over the three days following Thanksgiving, 80% were debit. The total number of debit transactions, as well as the total dollar amount of all debit transactions, each increased by 10% over 2009, TMG said. The amount spent on credit cards increased 1%.

 

MDDCCUA Paying Rebate To Members

COLUMBIA, Md.-The Maryland and DC Credit Union Association is paying a 10% rebate in 2010 to its affiliated CUs with assets of more than $500,000, and a full 2010 dues rebate for credit unions with assets less than $500,000. MDDCCUA said the rebate was possible due to earnings from an incentive program provided by CUNA Mutual Group. PHOENIX-At its annual Directors Conference here, CUES inducted five people into its Volunteer Hall of Fame: Patricia J. Ellis, chair of HEW FCU in Alexandria, Va.; Joseph E. Toochin, ex-officio chair of United Nations FCU in Long Island City, N.Y.; George Whitfield, director, generations FCU in San Antonio, and Dale R. Whittaker, chair at Vantage West CU in Tucson, Ariz.

 

Family Wins 'weLiveFIT' Contest

TALLAHASSEE-The Shaw Family (Jim and Cheryl, and children Cassidy and Jack) were named winners of Florida Commerce CU's "weLiveFIT! Challenge." After competing against eight other families to improve their household finances, the Shaw's increased their savings to $3,016, reduced their debt by $2,798 and boosted their credit scores by 161 points to win the $10,000 grand prize. Other families also won cash prizes.
